A portfolio tells a story. It
is the story of knowing… Portfolios are a student’s own stories of what
they know, why they believe they know it and why others should be of the
same opinion. (Paulson & Paulson, 1991)
My Vision for Publishing Student Work
My ideal vision for publishing student work would be for my
students to create a web portfolio and establish a sustainable professional web
presence for themselves. Students need to be independent learners and reflect
on their learning and progress. They need to ask themselves the questions of
what worked, what did not work and what could they do to improve next
time. Designed well, a web-based portfolio would result in increased
student understanding of what, why and how they have learned, support their organizational
and communication skills, and reinforce the importance of setting goals and
creating strategies for lifelong learning.
The reality for showcasing my students’ work and our online program is that I must be creative. This is a wonderful challenge. My current plan is to use samples of student work that do not directly identify the students. The purpose for publishing student work on this website is to encourage and promote our online learning program and to build awareness of the possibilities and opportunities it offers.
